A gutter’s purpose is to drain water from the rooftop to a downspout that will deposit this water away from the house’s foundations. Water shouldn’t stand in your gutters because it could lead to pest problems and mold growth. Excessive and constant weight from all this standing water could cause the gutter to break away from the fascia. If you have often noticed standing water in your gutters, it is time for you to inspect the matter and find a timely solution to avoid any serious damage.
Clogged Downspout Could Lead to Standing Water in the Gutters
This is the most common cause of standing water in the gutters. A clogged downspout prevents the water from flowing down and thus causes a blockage which leads to standing water in the gutter. If a clogged downspout is ignored, it could lead to excessive damage to the roof, siding, and foundation and even pull the gutter away from the building.
One straightforward solution to this problem is getting your downspouts cleaned at least twice a year. Recommended times are before spring and after autumn. You can clean the downspouts yourself if you are feeling adventurous, or you can always rely on the services of a professional.
Poor Slope Can Lead to Standing Water
Gutters should be installed at a special downslope angle to let gravity pull all the water from the higher point to the lower. Anything less than one-quarter inch of slope per 10 feet of gutter could result in standing water. If you are not sure whether your gutters are installed at the proper angle, get to the roof and see if there is any water pool or debris accumulated at the roof and if so, this should indicate the improper slope of the gutter.
Luckily, this problem is also very solvable. Use a leveler to mark the gutter area that doesn’t have the proper slope and bend the hanger to create the proper slope. This is tricky, and if you are not sure how to do it, you should always call a professional.
